Family Therapy
Why the Family Program is Important
The basis of Casa Palmera's Family Program is to introduce the strong
belief that the behavior of every member of a family impacts every other
member of that family. Not only does the impact affect everyone within
the family, but also the stability of the family, which often depends upon
each member fulfilling specific roles.
NOTE: The family program is only available for residents in a 30-day
plus program.
How It Works
The family is contacted weekly by the Primary Therapist to keep them
aware of what is happening from the very beginning of the resident's
treatment. These weekly contacts create a line of communication between
the family and the Primary Therapist, who is responsible for managing
the care of the resident.
Weekly contacts also enable the Primary Therapist, as well as our
Treatment Team, to obtain ongoing information that allows us to strengthen
and enhance the resident's care As treatment proceeds, the team can then
formulate a more integrative treatment approach with which to meet the
resident's particular needs.
Weekly telephone contacts with the family culminate in three connective
days of face-to face meetings at Casa Palmera, whereby the family meets
with our professional staff. The Family Program presents to the family all the
therapeutic modalities that each individual resident experiences during a stay
at Casa Palmera. This presentation allows the team at Casa Palmera to
formulate an integrative approach that is individually designed for each
residents' needs. Information obtained in the ongoing weekly contacts,
and the three days of face-to-face meetings with the family, generate
information our Treatment Team will use to anticipate the nature of family
members interactions with the resident. This anticipation makes it possible
to assist family members to identify and change their unhealthy ways of
relating to the resident, and use relating skills that will support, and help
maintain the healthy changes acquired by the resident in the course of treatment.
How Family Interaction Plays a Role in the Future
Information acquired through the family interaction is also a significant
factor in the development of a more appropriate discharge and aftercare plan,
and provides information to other professionals, whose services may be
necessary to sustain the resident's ongoing recovery after discharge from
the Casa Palmera treatment program.
Life-changing Lessons
After completing the Family Program, family members are encouraged to work
on their own issues, and utilize the skills they learned to continue developing
healthy relationships with each other. Resources and recommendations for
support services are given to each family, specific to their needs.
The Family Program is included in the cost of an individual's treatment.
