Everyone experiences a certain amount of anxiety from time to time, but anxiety disorders are much more severe and have serious consequences on a person’s ability to live a normal life. Because of this, some people who suffer from an anxiety disorder such as General Anxiety, Panic Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Social Phobia or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) will attempt to self-medicate their symptoms by turning to alcohol or drugs. Using substances may provide a temporary escape, but it does not solve the underlying problem. In fact, abusing drugs or alcohol will only increase the severity of a person’s anxiety symptoms over time.

Anxiety disorder is a mental illness that can have debilitating effects on the person suffering from it. Oftentimes people with an anxiety disorder will turn to alcohol to numb their symptoms in an attempt to live a “normal” life. Although alcohol may provide a temporary escape, it does not treat the underlying disorder and will over time increase the severity of anxiety symptoms, causing the individual to continue drinking until dependence or addiction has occurred.
