What is Dance Movement Therapy?
Dance movement therapy (DMT) is a way of expressing one’s emotions through the use of dance and movement. One core belief of this therapy is that the mind and body are interrelated. Dancing can be a very energizing and liberating experience. However, only after certain psychological barriers are crossed does one gain the physical and emotional benefits.
This form of expressive therapy uses movement as a way of reaching out to those with various emotional, psychological, social and physical dilemmas. DMT is beneficial to a wide range of people, offering both individual and group sessions.
History of Dance Movement Therapy
One of the primary founders of dance therapy is Marian Chace. Marian was a modern dancer in the 20th century and a firm believer in the connection of the mind and body. In 1930, she noticed her students’ interest in the emotion of dance rather than in its mechanics. Also noticed were the profound healing effects that this dancing had on the students. It was at this time that Chace was asked to work with patients at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital through the use of dance therapy.
In 1966, Marian Chace began the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA). She was also its president. This association is still in existence today, and upholds the highest standards of dance movement therapy. Dance therapy has since spread to several international organizations such as Japan, Germany and France.
Benefits of Dance Movement Therapy
When it comes to recovery, body centered therapies like dancing can bring important comfort to individuals struggling with psychological issues. The psychological release dancing gives has a profound impact on those who desire eating disorder treatment, on someone with autism, or on someone seeking trauma recovery or treatment for drug abuse. Families who desire a closer relationship as well as individuals with emotional disorders can also benefit from DMT. Beyond the tremendous therapeutic benefits of Dance Therapy, dancing can also be a fun way to improve personal growth and self-esteem.
