Overview
Eating Disorder Treatment Program
If you or a loved one is suffering from the profound consequences of anorexia,
bulimia or binge eating, and you are seeking a residential eating disorder
treatment facility, Casa Palmera can help. Our eating disorder treatment
program is designed with each individual patient in mind. We specialize
in healing physical problems, while also addressing your specific
struggles and fears.
By identifying each complex circumstance that contributes
to your eating disorder,
the staff at Casa Palmera will evaluate each resident
and develop a personalized,
structured eating disorder treatment plan. This plan is tailored to include a
personal history,
including both medical and psychological, and may include
other integrative modalities
such as:
For anorexia nervosa, we use behavioral management techniques in a
multi-disciplinary team setting to begin the transition from structured
"mechanical eating" to "intuitive eating," where you'll learn to freely eat
according to your body's true needs.
For bulimia nervosa, we use
Cognitive Behavioral therapy in a multi-disciplinary
team setting.
Dialectical behavioral therapy complements the development of
coping skills, because individuals with eating disorders are challenged
at each
stage of their recovery process. This includes a daily schedule of
healthy eating, appropriate exercise, stress management and an understanding
of patterns and behaviors that have been controlling your life.
What Is An Eating Disorder
An eating disorder is a psychological malady in which someone obsesses over
his/her intake of food as a way of coping with stress, fear and pain. The obsessions
trick him/her into feeling like he/she has some control in her life.
Approximately
8-10 million people today suffer from some form of an
eating disorder.
Eating disorders are most common among women,
but can affect men as well.
Unlike other self-destructive lifestyles and behaviors, eating disorders
are especially unique. Humans, by nature, have to eat to survive,
but for women and men with eating disorders,
it's more than just
practicing "moderation." A comprehensive eating disorder treatment
facility understands that eating disorders are very
serious, and in many cases, recovery is
literally a matter of life and death.
Types of Eating Disorders
Three Diagnosable Types of Eating Disorders
• Anorexia Nervosa
With this eating disorder, a person either eats very little,
or nothing at all.
Typically, those with this disorder are very thin, and
approximately 15%
or more, are below a body weight that is normal for
their specific height.
• Bulimia Nervosa
People with bulimia typically binge eat, and then purge what they have
just eaten. Binge eating is when you consume an uncomfortable amount
of food, often resulting in a very sick feeling. Purging is a form of
self-induced vomiting. This vomiting can be done through the use
of diuretics, laxatives, or excessive exercise. Those with bulimia
typically
maintain a normal weight.
• Binge Eating/Compulsive Overeating
A binge eater consumes an excessive amount
of food, typically in a short
amount of time. Most people with this disorder
are obese, and also have a
history of depression. Unlike those with bulimia,
compulsive eaters do not
purge after they consume their food.
The most common of these three eating disorders is binge eating, although it has only recently been recognized as an eating disorder. Not every one may fit into one of these exact categories, but they still may have an eating disorder. This is called an eating disorder not otherwise specified (ED-NOS).
Your Situation
Having an eating disorder is a serious problem in both males and females. Unfortunately
it is often brushed off as merely a self-esteem problem, rather than as a real psychological
disorder that cannot be cured simply with conviction and self-control. Our skilled
multidisciplinary
treatment team at Casa Palmera understands this concept and
your eating disorder's
complexity. Our success in treating women and men is what
makes
Casa Palmera a nationally recognized eating disorder treatment facility.
Often an individual suffering from an eating disorder has other conditions that
can contribute to or complicate his/her disorder. You, or your loved one, may have
been sexually, physically or emotionally abused, or you may have overly critical friends
and family, or a poor family environment. An eating disorder is often used as a way to cope
with these difficult experiences and to help find a sense of control in your life. Also, those
with depression,
anxiety, perfectionism, poor self-esteem and obsessive-compulsive disorder
(OCD)
are more likely to have an eating disorder.
Every person is different, much like every eating disorder; therefore, every person requires
an individualized treatment program. Here at Casa Palmera, our goal is to cover every facet
of your eating disorder. This includes addressing specific behaviors, looking at
personal body
image issues and dealing with the potential for relapse. We recognize the true medical nature
of this disease and the far-reaching health complications it may cause. Our state-of-the-art,
tranquil treatment facility provides a safe and patient-centered healing environment
for
women and men alike.
Seeking Help: There is a Solution
If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of an eating disorder, it is critical to seek

ways. Relationships, physical health, performance at school and work,

Having an eating
disorder is mistakenly seen as a way of controlling your life, but usually
in the end,
it actually controls you.
