Our Program
If you or a loved one are suffering from the profound consequences of anorexia, bulimia or binge eating and are looking for an eating disorder residential facility, Casa Palmera can help. Our eating disorder treatment program was designed with each individual resident in mind and specialized to not only heal your physical problems, but also to address your specific struggles and fears.
By identifying and beginning to resolve the complex circumstances that contribute to eating disorders, the staff at our eating disorder treatment center develops a personalized structured eating disorder treatment plan according to an individual's own unique life circumstances - including their personal history, and their medical and psychological requirements. We do so by having you take a Clinical Diagnostic Assessment with one of our professional team members.
The program here at Casa Palmera strives to explore underlying personality structure and personal history which gives rise to the maladaptive behaviors through individual intensive psychotherapy, establish a healthy lifestyle through a daily schedule of healthy eating, develop appropriate exercise and stress management, as well as gain cognitive understanding and control over unconscious habit patterns using the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
What is an eating disorder?
An eating disorder is a psychological disorder in which someone obsesses over their intake of food as a way of coping and gaining some sort of control in their life. Approximately 5-10 million people today suffer from some form of an eating disorder. Eating disorders are most common among women.
Unlike other self-destructive lifestyles and behaviors, eating disorders are especially unique. Humans by nature have to eat to survive, but for men and women with eating disorders, it's more than practicing "moderation". A comprehensive eating disorder treatment center understands that the conditions of an eating disorder are very complicated, and in many cases recovery is literally a matter of life and death.
Types of eating disorders
There are three diagnosable types of eating disorders. These are:
- Anorexia Nervosa - This eating disorder is one in which a person either eats very little or nothing at all. Typically, those with this disorder are very thin and approximately 15% or more below the normal body weight for their specific height.
- Bulimia Nervosa - People with bulimia typically binge eat and then proceed to purge what they have just eaten. Binge eating is when you consume an uncomfortable amount of food, often times leaving a very sick feeling, and purging is a form of self-induced vomiting. Sometimes this vomiting is done through the use of diuretics, laxatives, or excessive exercise. Those with bulimia typically maintain a normal weight.
- Binge Eating/Compulsive Overeating - Binge eating is a disorder in which someone consumes an excessive amount of food in a typically short period of time. Most people with this disorder are obese and have a history of depression. Also, unlike those with bulimia, compulsive eaters do not purge their food.
The most common of these three eating disorders is probably binge eating, although only recently has it been recognized as an eating disorder. Some people may not fit into one of these three categories but rather may have an eating disorder not otherwise specified (ED-NOS). Learn more about ED-NOS »
Your Situation
Having an eating disorder is a serious problem- in both males and females. Unfortunately though, it is often brushed off as merely a self-esteem problem rather than as a real psychological disorder requiring more than mere conviction and self-control. Our skilled therapy treatment team at Casa Palmera understands this concept and your eating disorder's complexity, which is among the reasons why we are such a successful eating disorder treatment center.
Every person is different, much like every eating disorder is, and therefore requires a different variation of our recovery program due to their specialized needs. For you or a loved one who may have been sexually, physically or emotionally abused, who has overly critical friends and family or who may have a poor family environment, an eating disorder is often used as a way to cope with these difficult experiences and find a sense of control in their lives. Also, those with depression, anxiety, perfectionism, poor self-esteem and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are more likely to obtain an eating disorder.
Here at Casa Palmera our goal is to cover every facet of you or your loved one's eating disorder, including addressing specific behaviors, one's personal body image, an individual's potential for relapse, the true medical nature of the disease and the far-reaching health complications it may cause. Our state-of-the-art, yet tranquil treatment facility provides a safe and resident-centered healing environment for men and women alike.
Seeking help: Finding a solution
If you or a loved one are experiencing many symptoms of an eating disorder it is important to seek help now. As mentioned previously, an eating disorder is a serious psychological disorder needing therapy, and not one to be taken lightly. Constantly stressing over food and body image is not a good thing and affects your life in more ways than one. Relationships, physical health, performance at school and work as well as other enjoyable activities in life can be negatively altered by an eating disorder. Often times having an eating disorder is looked upon as a way of controlling one's life, but typically in the end, it is the thing that makes us lose control.
The first step in seeking treatment is to call. Casa Palmera seeks to reverse your unhealthy patterns of thinking and develop a plan to provide overall healing and reduce your risk of relapse. By calling our treatment facility today you can talk with an admissions coordinator to determine if our program is the right one for you. We are willing to answer all of your questions and will accommodate you or your loved one in any way possible in order to make the transition into recovery easier.
Many people who struggle with eating disorders also experience co-occurring difficulty with addictions to alcohol and/or other drugs, and/or associated trauma. At Casa Palmera we can help you address, understand and begin recovery from these issues as well.
