Trauma Treatment
Treatment for Trauma, Depression and Anxiety
There are events that happen to us as children or adults that are so overwhelming and inherently frightening that they cause temporary, and in some cases, permanent changes in our physical and psychological responses to stress. In general, post-traumatic stress disorder can be seen as an overwhelming of the body's normal psychological defenses against stress. Thus, after the trauma, there is abnormal function (dysfunction) of the normal defense systems, which results in certain symptoms.
The symptoms are produced in three different ways:
- Re-experiencing the trauma
- Persistent avoidance
- Increased arousal
Does fear of another traumatic event keep you from enjoying life? Do you have nightmares or constant reoccurring thoughts of your tragedy? Is anxiety and depression keeping you from others? Someone is here to help. At Casa Palmera, there is hope for recovery from trauma and other co-occuring conditions. Our residential treatment facility effectively treats various types of trauma. We not only treat your physical symptoms, but we take an in-depth look at your emotional needs as well.
Signs of Trauma
It's important to get treatment as soon as possible when symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) begin. If you don't get treatment, PTSD symptoms may become disabling. Once a person has experienced a traumatic event, many warning signs of trauma can arise.
- Inability to trust others
- Difficulty concentrating / Easily distracted
- Depression / Anxiety
- Feeling uncomfortable in social situations
- Abuse of drugs
- Recurring thoughts from the trauma interfering with everyday life
What you need to know about trauma:
Trauma is where an unexpected situation occurs and your emotional and/or physical well-being is violated through the stress of the circumstances. Such a situation can be anything. Some examples include physical injury, abuse, witnessing death or a natural disaster. In addition to depression and substance abuse disorders, the diagnosis of PTSD often co-occurs with eating disorders, and anxiety.
Depression
It is estimated that 19 million American adults suffer from depression every year, and with proper treatment, 4 out of 5 patients will improve. (Natural Advisory Mental Health Council Healthcare Reform for American With Severe Mental Illness. American Journal of Psychiatry. 1993; 150: 1447-65)There are many reasons, or even a combination of reasons why a person might become depressed. These include traumatic life experiences such as the death of a loved one or other unresolved trauma, certain diseases or medicines, substance abuse, hormonal changes, or a family history of depression. Often it is a combination of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors that bring on depression.
Signs Of Depression
- Depressed or irritable mood most of the day—nearly every day
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities (such as hobbies, work, sex, or being with friends) most of the day—nearly every day
- A sudden change in weight (weight loss without dieting, gaining more than 5% of body weight in 1 month), or a change in appetite
- Inability to sleep or sleeping too much, nearly every day
- Frequent feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt nearly every day
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions nearly every day
- Frequent thoughts of death or suicide (or a suicide attempt or plan)
Anxiety
For people with generalized anxiety disorder or GAD, daily life is a constant state of worry, fear, and dread. The anxiety so dominates the person's thinking that it interferes with daily functioning, including work, school, social activities and relationships. People with symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder tend to always expect disaster and can't stop worrying about health, money, family, work or school.
Signs of Anxiety
- Excessive, ongoing worry and tension
- Restlessness or a feeling of being “edgy”
- Muscle tension
- Headaches / Nausea
- Difficulty concentrating
- Trouble falling or staying asleep
- Being easily startled
